Modelling of Energy Consumption in IEEE 802.11ah Networks for M2M Traffic

چکیده
IEEE 802.11ah is a sub-1 GHz standard designed to meet the requirements of future machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The standard should be able to support use cases for the M2M communications with thousands of stations capable of generating both periodic and aperiodic traffic for a single access point. In some cases, like environmental and agricultural monitoring, the nodes are typically powered by battery or through energy harvesting. For these applications it is important to use a communication technology that is energy efficient. IEEE 802.11ah tries to achieve this objective for networks with a large nodes number by introducing new energy saving mechanisms and a novel channel access mechanism. This work proposes a mathematical model to compute the energy consumption of an IEEE 802.11ah network.

Capacity Analysis of IEEE 802.11ah WLANs for M2M Communications
Focusing on the increasing market of the sensors and actuators networks, the IEEE 802.11ah Task Group is currently working on the standardization of a new amendment. This new amendment will operate at the sub-1GHz band, ensure transmission ranges up to 1 Km, data rates above 100 kbps and very low power operation. With IEEE 802.11ah, the WLANs will offer a solution for applications such as smart...

We propose demonstrating an IEEE 802.11ah wireless local area network (WLAN) prototype that is configured as a self-contained machine-2-machine (M2M) wireless sensor system. Because the IEEE 802.11ah protocol standardization is under way, no commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) IEEE 802.11ah Wi-Fi product is available yet. However, the proposed prototype has the potential to solve this issue and all...

The IEEE 802.11ah amendment is designed to support upto 8K M2M devices over the Sub-GHz channel. To achieve this, it introduces new modifications to the PHY and MAC layers. A dynamic Restricted Access Window (RAW) mechanism is introduced at the MAC layer. RAW splits the access for different devices into small chunks of time. Using the RAW mechanism, we propose a novel Delay and Energy Aware RAW...
متن کاملAn energy consumption model for IEEE 802.11ah WLANs
One of the main challenges when designing a new self-powered wireless sensor network (WSN) technology is the vast operational dependence on its scarce energy resources. Therefore, a thorough identification and characterisation of the main energy consumption processes may lay the foundation for developing further mechanisms aimed to make a more efficient use of devices’ batteries. This paper pro...
